The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, AMPAS® held the 2001 Technical Awards presentation dinner at Regent Beverly Wilshire Hotel on Saturday, March 3, 2001, at 6:30 p.m.

The awards were presented by Renée Zellweger who masterfully navigated her way through every one of the darkly esoteric engineering terms that are used to describe the subjects of the awards. And she did it with complete charm, grace and aplomb. It was a most impressive performance by this gloriously talented actress. When at last the final award of the night was presented, the audience, of mostly technical people, gave her a standing ovation which lasted for several minutes.

We were there to receive a special award of commendation for our work on getting the volume levels of previews in cinemas down to a manageable level. This had become such a serious problem that the Academy noted that our efforts merited the rarely given special award.
